Is there any good news about climate change?

Yes, there is a lot of bad news around the climate crisis.

But let’s talk about the victories, and why there is no argument for despair.

Partners’ Meeting and Joint Workshop to Design the GaGEN Game Instructions

In April 2024, GaGEN partners came together for a transnational meeting and dedicated workshop focused on shaping the key resources that will guide the use of the GaGEN digital game. The workshop, attended by 20 participants, provided an opportunity for partners to co-create the first draft of the game’s instructions and recommendations. This practical tool will later support facilitators trained under WP4. Furthermore, partners worked on the game’s environments, missions, and tasks.

Beyond working on the instruction pack, the workshop enabled partners to develop game environments, missions, and tasks for the game. It was also an opportunity to align strategies for the next steps, including preparing the pre-test for the mGAe.

This collaborative moment was essential to ensure a shared vision of how the GaGEN game will be implemented and to strengthen the project’s commitment to creating practical, user-centred resources.

Presentation of the state of art in Guimarães

Aproximar was present at the International Meeting on Environmental Education at the Landscape Laboratory where it presented preliminary results of co-creation activities with children and the elderly, within the scope of the initiative @gagen.initiative –

Preserving the environment is everyone’s responsibility and therefore, in favour of a more sustainable future.

Co-creation with Older Adults and Children: Building the GaGEN Game Together

From September to November 2023, all GaGEN partners hosted national co-creation sessions with older adults and children (under 12), bringing generations together to share ideas about the environment and sustainability. Guided by a common structure and resources developed by the project team, these sessions allowed participants to test concepts, exchange perspectives, and give valuable input for the design of the GaGEN digital game.

This collaborative process was a key milestone for the project. It ensured that the game reflects the needs, interests, and experiences of its future players while sparking curiosity and engagement among children and older adults. The insights gathered during these sessions now shape the game’s methodological framework and support the development of next steps in the project.

GaGEN Partners Meet in Poland for Transnational Co-creation

In September 2023, GaGEN partners gathered in Warsaw, Poland, for a transnational co-creation meeting — an important step in shaping the future GaGEN digital game. Building on the ideas collected during some of the national co-creation sessions with children and older adults, partners worked together to refine the methodological framework that will guide the game’s design.

This meeting created space for in-depth discussions on how to adapt content to different levels of digital skills and environmental knowledge, ensuring the game is accessible and engaging for all generations. Partners also used the opportunity to review the overall progress of the project, exchange insights on management, dissemination, and especially the upcoming development of the game under WP3.

The event in Warsaw strengthened collaboration across the partnership and laid the foundation for creating a meaningful, user-informed digital tool to promote environmental awareness through intergenerational learning.

Climate change poses significant risks to children’s health and well-being

Approximately 1 billion children (nearly half of the world’s children) live in extremely high-risk countries.

Climate change is a direct threat to children’s well-being. In many countries, rising sea levels and temperatures are already putting stress on the ecosystem – affecting where people can safely live and grow food. And while children are the least responsible for the changing environment, they are likely to bear the greatest burden now and in future.

IPCC reports show that if levels of greenhouse gases continue to rise, global temperatures will also increase leading to more extreme weather events in many parts of the world.

The UNICEF Children’s Climate Risk Index showed that we are crossing key boundaries in the Earth’s natural system, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing levels of pollution in the air, soil, water and oceans. As a result, the climate crisis is creating a child’s rights crisis. It is creating a water crisis, a health crisis, an education crisis, a protection crisis and a participation crisis.

Games are not (only) for children: intergenerational games for old and young people

Games are important for the development of children and are also beneficial for the elderly. Intergenerational interaction can promote better health and social engagement, as well as learning opportunities.

By combining the concept of playful learning with intergenerational learning, it is possible to create spaces and activities that engage adults and children, providing enriching interactions and mutual benefits. These intergenerational games strengthen well-being, reduce social isolation, and create powerful community connections. This approach reinforces the importance of play throughout life and strengthens community resilience.

But… What the heck are serious games?

But… What the heck are serious games? 🎮

Serious games are a genre that stands out for offering a narrative experience outside the context of conventional entertainment. These games are primarily intended to “gamify” the learning processes in a modern environment. They promote interaction and experiential learning, allowing players to develop a basic knowledge in various areas.

One of the main advantages of serious games is the promotion of critical thinking and the ability to solve problems quickly and effectively. In addition, serious games allow players to explore virtual environments where they can learn, choose, and decide in a realistic way.

Serious games offer an innovative and effective approach to education, using narrative and interactivity to promote learning. They encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and provide an engaging and adaptive learning experience.
